Direct answer: the footprint of a tonne of cement comes roughly two thirds from chemistry (limestone decarbonation) and one third from the kiln's energy — public sector orders of magnitude. Where the footprint comes from (sector orders of magnitude)

These proportions are public industry benchmarks, not a plant declaration: each site has its own balance, documented through life-cycle analyses (EPD) that we do not publish — and we will not publish unmeasured figures.

The real levers, today

• Reduced-clinker formulations: composite cements (CEM II, our limestone-filler CPJ range among them) integrate less clinker per tonne of cement — a family property, not a label.
• Structure service life: a well-formulated, well-cured, well-designed concrete that lasts fifty years amortises its footprint over decades of use — durability is construction's first climate gesture.
• Short logistics: producing in Dakhla for southern Morocco avoids the long haul of cements trucked from northern plants or imported. On that item, the local choice is a carbon choice.

What DAM says — and does not say

Verifiable: a plant at Lassargua (Dakhla) with a production capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year; 2, 7 and 28-day strength tests and a certificate per lot; an ISO 14001 journey in progress — we will not claim it acquired before it is. Four questions to ask any supplier

• Where does the cement come from — plant-to-site distance and transport mode?
• Is the class right — over-specifying MPa on an everyday structure burns clinker for nothing; under-specifying shortens life. The right one is the durable one.
• What tests and traceability — certificates per lot, NM 10.1.004 / EN 197-1 compliance?
• What service life is targeted — maintenance, curing, cover: the least-carbon structure is the one you do not rebuild.
