How to choose the right cement for your construction project

Choosing a cement comes down to three decisions: the strength class suited to your structure, compliance with the standards in force in Morocco, and packaging that matches your site volume. For most residential and commercial projects, a CPJ 45 (45 MPa at 28 days) is more than enough. CPJ 55 earns its place once the structure is heavily stressed or exposed to an aggressive environment.

Start from the structure, not the price

The strength class states the minimum compressive strength reached at 28 days, measured on standardised specimens. That structural benchmark — not the price per tonne — is the first selection criterion. An under-specified cement compromises the structure; an over-specified one inflates the bill with no measurable benefit.

• Standard reinforced concrete (columns, beams, slabs, shear walls of residential buildings): CPJ 45, the reference performance/cost ratio.
• Foundations and ground slabs: CPJ 45 covers the vast majority of cases.
• Civil engineering, infrastructure, deep foundations, aggressive environments (sea spray, sulphate-bearing soils): CPJ 55, with its clinker-rich matrix and higher strength.
• Everyday masonry, renders, simple screeds: the more economical CPJ 35 works — availability varies with production campaigns.

Demand standard compliance

In Morocco, cement is governed by NM 10.1.004, aligned with European standard EN 197-1. These texts define composition, designations (CEM I to CEM V) and the mechanical requirements of each family. A compliant producer must be able to supply a certificate of conformity for every batch: that is the buyer's right, not a favour. Match packaging to the site

The same cement ships in three forms, and the right one depends on volume and available logistics. In 50 kg bags (20 bags to the pallet, one tonne), handling stays manual and dosing precise: ideal for masonry and small sites. In one-tonne big bags, lifting requires a crane or forklift, but packaging waste drops sharply. In bulk (30-tonne minimum), delivered by tanker truck and pumped straight into a silo, it is the most economical solution for large sites already equipped.

Three habits before ordering

Check the packing date: cement stored for months gradually loses activity. Consolidate your needs: volume discounts start at 10 tonnes (2%) and reach 12% at 100 tonnes.
