The safety data sheet (SDS) is the document describing the hazards of a chemical product and the precautions to take. For cement, it is not an administrative accessory: cement is an alkaline product which, once mixed, reaches a high pH — aggressive to skin and eyes on prolonged contact — and whose dry dust irritates the airways. This article summarises what every site needs to know; the full SDS of the delivered product remains the reference document, available on request from our quality department, with downloadable documents gathered on our Documents page.
Chemicals regulation (GHS/CLP system) imposes a 16-section structure. Four cover the bulk of site needs:
Three situations account for most incidents: mixing bare-handed (chemical burns from alkalinity, sometimes delayed by several hours), dry cement dust when opening and pouring bags (eye and bronchial irritation, worsened by wind), and fresh concrete splashes to the eye during vibrating or floating. Sweat and damp clothing make contact worse: wet cement inside a boot or a torn glove acts like an alkaline compress against the skin.
| Situation | Main hazard | Reflex |
|---|---|---|
| Hand mixing | Delayed alkaline burn | Nitrile gloves, long sleeves |
| Opening bags | Irritant dust | Clean knife, FFP2 mask, goggles |
| Concreting / poker vibrator | Splash to the eye | Goggles with side shields, helmet if needed |
| Cleaning tools | Prolonged damp contact | Boots, dry spare clothing |
The kit costs a few dozen dirhams and prevents the essentials: waterproof nitrile gloves (leather and fabric soak through), goggles with side shields, an FFP2 dust mask for confined or windy areas, boots and covering clothing. In hot weather the temptation is to strip protection off — precisely when sweat amplifies the alkaline effect is when you must keep it, choosing breathable models.
The SDS echoes good storage practice: bags on film-wrapped pallets in a ventilated, dry room, bags opened with a knife without tearing or throwing, wet cleaning rather than dry sweeping — which puts dust back in the air. These practices protect quality too: cement stored dry keeps its performance well beyond its plant exit.
With every cement delivery, you can require the product's up-to-date SDS, the NM 10.1.004 batch certificate of conformity, and the technical data sheet. On organised sites, these documents are archived with the daily log — in the event of an inspection or incident, it is this paperwork that establishes that the product used was compliant and that handling precautions were known.
The cement SDS boils down to one sentence: alkaline product, waterproof protection, long rinsing. Request it with your quote, post the first-aid gestures near the mixing station, and equip every crew with basic PPE. Our Documents page gathers the sheets; the quality department answers any question on a specific batch — with the batch number, the answer comes fast.
The SDS follows the 16 CLP-regulation sections; it comes with deliveries and is available from the DAM quality department or the Documents page.
Cement is classified as an irritant: alkaline once mixed (high pH), with dust irritating eyes and airways.
Nitrile waterproof gloves, goggles, FFP2 dust mask, covering clothing: the minimum kit for mixing.
Open bags with a knife without tearing, mix without splashing, wash skin with water and neutral soap on contact.
Eyes: rinse for 15 minutes with clean water and seek advice. Skin: wash without rubbing. Swallowing: water, no vomiting, medical opinion.
