Biomass is one of the levers for decarbonising cement-kiln heat. Direct answer: substituting petcoke or coal with biosourced fuels (wood, agricultural residues, sorted refuse-derived fuels) cuts the fossil share of clinker energy; kilns around the world run with significant substitution rates — at the price of demanding quality logistics. It is a plant lever, transparent to the buyer. The difficulty is not burning wood — it is burning always the same thing: controlled homogeneity, moisture and calorific value.
A clinker kiln combines three rare assets: a continuous flame at ~1,450 °C, a long residence time of materials, and ashes that combine into the clinker instead of becoming a residue to dispose of. Valorising a fuel in a cement kiln means melting it into the product — no bottom ash, no ash to store.
| Fuel | Asset | Watch-point |
|---|---|---|
| Wood, sawdust, barks | Available, biogenic | Variable moisture, calorific value to dry |
| Agricultural residues (husks, bagasse, stones) | Local resource, short circuit | Chlorine and fluxes, seasonality |
| Refuse-derived fuels (RDF) | Energy density, waste recovered | Heterogeneity, chlorine, metals, preparation |
A sustainable substitution demands three disciplines: drying and homogenisation of the material (a kiln hates variation), regular analysis of incoming fuels (calorific value, chlorine, sulphur, metals), and continuous emission monitoring at the stack, within the environmental permit. A badly prepared alternative fuel costs more than it brings.
Clinker fired under a biomass flame and clinker fired under petcoke obey the same standard NM 10.1.004 / EN 197-1 and pass the same tests. It is a matter of industrial policy and plant footprint, not of use quality. DAM publishes no substitution rate — we prefer to describe the sector lever as it is rather than put forward an unaudited figure.

Firing at ~1,450 °C consumes most of the clinker energy: biomass addresses the fuel share, not the chemistry.
Wood, agricultural residues, RDF: each family has assets and watch-points — moisture, chlorine, seasonality.
Drying, homogenisation, regular analyses: a kiln hates calorific-value variation.
Biomass-fired clinker answers to the same NM 10.1.004 / EN 197-1 standard and the same tests.
The subject evolves at the pace of permits and local channels: documented information beats a marketing rate.

Co-processing valorises waste in the ~1,450 °C kiln with no final residue — under a strict environmental permit. What the kiln accepts, refuses, and its place in the waste hierarchy.
