Cement and lime are both binders: they turn a mix of sand and water into a hard material. But their chemistry and fields of use differ deeply. Cement sets quickly and develops high mechanical strength: it is the binder of structures. Lime, gentler and far more open to water vapour, remains the binder of old masonry and renders that must "breathe". Choosing between them means choosing a behaviour, not just a price.
Portland cement comes from firing limestone and clay at about 1,450 °C, followed by very fine grinding with gypsum. Its hydration produces compounds that harden within hours and keep gaining strength for weeks. Lime (air or hydraulic) is obtained at lower temperature by calcining more or less clayey limestone. Its set is slow — days to weeks depending on type — and its strengths stay moderate, but its plasticity and compatibility with historic materials are unmatched.
| Cement | Lime | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Fast (hours) | Slow (days to weeks) |
| Strength | High (45-55 MPa for a CPJ) | Moderate |
| Vapour permeability | Low | High |
| Typical use | Structures, reinforced concrete, modern load-bearing masonry | Renders on old buildings, repointing, flexible mortars |
On old masonry — stone, mud brick, rammed earth — a cement render traps moisture: water rising by capillarity can no longer escape, freezes or concentrates salts, and the wall deforms and spalls. Lime lets the wall breathe and absorbs the micro-movements of old structures without cracking. Repointing stone, rendering traditional façades and compatible repair mortars are lime territory, occasionally as a bastard mortar (lime + cement) to harden a little faster.
Everything that carries, is calculated and resists belongs to cement: reinforced elements, ring beams, slabs, block masonry, renders on modern substrates. In Morocco, CPJ 45 cements cover everyday masonry and interior and exterior renders; CPJ 55 takes over for demanding works and aggressive environments. Standard NM 10.1.004 frames these products and guarantees the announced characteristics.
Before choosing, reverse the question: what is the substrate, and what do you expect from the mortar — bond, protect, carry, or let breathe? On new structural work, cement. On heritage to preserve, lime. In between, the bastard mortar offers a compromise, dosed with care. When in doubt on an old building, a heritage professional's opinion avoids the costly damage of a cement render on a wall that needed to breathe.

150 to 250 kg of cement per m³ depending on class, 5 to 10 cm thick: the lean layer that protects rebar and prepares the foundation, with the calculation method.
