What is refractory cement?
Refractory cement — also called aluminous cement or fused cement (CAC, Calcium Aluminate Cement) — is a special hydraulic binder formulated from calcium aluminates (CA, CA₂, C₁₂A₇) obtained by melting or firing at very high temperature (1,500-1,600 °C) a mixture of bauxite and limestone. Unlike standard Portland cement (based on calcium silicates), refractory cement retains its mechanical strength at temperatures where Portland decomposes: up to 1,500 °C for common grades, 1,800 °C for high-alumina grades, even 2,000 °C for special refractory concretes.
