What is reinforced concrete?

Reinforced concrete is a composite material that combines concrete (a mix of cement, sand, gravel and water) with high-adherence (HA) steel reinforcement. This combination exploits the complementary properties of both materials: concrete resists compression very well (30 to 60 MPa) but poorly in tension (10 times less), while steel takes up tensile forces.

Best practices for pouring reinforced concrete

Beyond the choice of cement, the quality of reinforced concrete depends on its implementation. Here are the essential best practices to guarantee the strength and durability of your structures.

1. Concrete vibration

Vibrate fresh concrete with a vibrating needle (40-60 mm diameter) to evacuate trapped air and ensure good compactness. Duration per point: 5 to 15 seconds. Insufficient vibration leaves honeycombing; excessive vibration causes segregation.

2. Concrete curing

Curing keeps concrete moist for at least 7 days (14 days in hot, dry climates like Dakhla) to allow complete cement hydration. Methods: watering, wet tarpaulin, film-forming curing agent. Proper curing increases final strength by 20%.

3. Formwork removal

Respect minimum times: 24-48 h for side formwork, 7 days for beams/slabs with span ≤ 6 m (at 70% strength), 21-28 days for long spans. Early formwork removal compromises strength and structural safety.

4. Water/cement ratio (W/C)
